L.A. previews August 18-23: Sunset Junction Street Fair, Charles Owens, Josh Nelson, An Endless Contortionist.

Sat.-Sun. Aug. 18-19 -- Sunset Junction Street Fair. If you can stand the crowds, the heat and, this year, the $15 entry fee (which ain’t much but it ain’t free anymore), you’re a better man than I; this event makes Ozzfest look like a croquet party. Schedule here.

Sun. Aug. 19 -- The phenomenal L.A. woodwind player Charles Owens is putting out his first record in God knows how long, and his quartet is celebrating with a brunch. At Catalina’s, 11:30am.

Thurs. Aug. 23 -- Local pianist Josh Nelson has a fluid touch and an unfettered imagination; tonight’s the release party for his new CD, and he’s got an amazing band: Matt Wilson (guh!) on drums, Darek Oles (wuh!) on bass, Ben Wendel (kratz!) on sax, Mike Scott on guitar and Sara Gazarek singin’. At the Vic, 2640 Main St., Santa Monica, (888) 367-5299.

Thurs. Aug. 23 -- Third of four Thursdays in August for An Endless Contortionist: saxist Matt Hayes, drummer Nate Cole and bassist Guy Pinhas, gettin’ way out there with different pals each week. Mr. Pinhas also recommends billmate UEM, an ambient group that plays earlier. At Relax Bar, 5511 Hollywood Blvd.; midnight; $7.
