Sept. 22: the keyboard-bass-drums trio of Paul Cornish, Logan Kane & Max Jaffe. Sat. Sept. 23: Bassist Billy Mohler celebrates the release of his new "Ultraviolet" with the truly distinctive saxist Chris Speed (who's on the album) and trumpeter Julien Knowles and drummer Jonathan Pinson (who aren't on it but coulda been); title track sounds fantastic. Mon. Sept. 24: super sax-bass-drums trio featuring Bill McHenry, Eric Revis & Tina Raymond.

* LACMA on Wilshire Boulevard's Miracle Mile offers FREE outdoor jazz concerts every Friday at 6pm in months when weather is mostly favorable. Fri. Sept. 22: robust tenorman Ernie Watts. Fri. * Sat. Sept. 23: The Central Avenue Jazz Festival on Central Avenue between MLK Blvd and Vernon returns for the first time since Covid, free and headlined by Hubert & Eloise Laws (3:30pm) and Billy Childs Quartet (4pm). Website here.
* 2220 Arts + Archives (Beverly Blvd. near Alvarado) hosts a variety of cultural presentations including jazz & electronic. Sat. Sept. 23: Trip out with Nate Mercereau-Josh Johnson-Carlos Niño Trio with Will Logan. Thurs. Sept. 28: Percussionist Andrea Centazzo's West Coast Art Ensemble features the most expert of veteran abstractionists. Sat. * The LAX-area bar Sam First offers 7:30pm and 9pm jazz shows, in person and sometimes STREAMING. Tues. Sept. 26: Ace drummer leads an enviable ensemble unit, Dan Schnelle Trio with Daniel Rotem & Joshua White. (Most other Tuesdays are jams, usually hosted by world-class pianist Gerald Clayton.) Wed. * Vibrato, a luxurious restaurant high up in Bel Air, books mostly mainstream jazz. Tues. Oct. 3: Le Coq Records artist Andy James, a traditionalist New York singer with a flamenco-dancing background, fronts her ace ensemble featuring pianist Jon Cowherd, saxist John Ellis, drummer Clarence Penn, bassist James Genus and percussionist Alex Acuña. Oct. 7: Anna Homler, exotic vocals augmented with found objects, plus Jorge Martin (electronics) and Jeff Schwartz (bass). Sat. Nov. 4: Michael Jon Fink (cool-jazz guitarist-composer) with Brian Walsh (clarinet) and Derek Stein (cello). Sat. Dec. 2: clarinetist Ben Goldberg with bassist Todd Sickafoose and drummer Scott Amendola. Sat. Dec. 9: Berlin-based oboist Cathy Milliken with bassist Jeff Schwartz and clarinetist Daniel Rothman. * Open Gate Theater has moved its long-running and invaluable avant concert series from the Eagle Rock Cultural Center mostly to the Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church, 301 N.
