An award-winning documentary by Justin Schein about the aging years of former peace activist Mayer Vishner, "Left on Purpose" was issued in 2015 but became available on Vimeo only this year. I worked with Mayer at L.A. Weekly in the '80s and had no idea he was an essential element of the '60s/'70s New York radical movement next to Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. For a hard look at depression and isolation, it's a gut punch. (Watch near the end for a short but telling appearance by the writer Michael Ventura.)
